The creamy, rich chocolate taste of mocha has long been a coffee house favorite. But do you know what the term actually means?
Turns out, mocha gets it name from a small town on the Red Sea coast of Yemen. As far back as the 15th century, this tiny port was a dominant exporter of coffee. Coffea arabica, a species native to the region, was the most popular, and became commonly known as “mocha” due to its port of origin.
The arabica beans were famed for their rich chocolate-like taste. Today, coffee beans from Yemen don’t have this unique flavor, so coffee shops have introduced real chocolate instead.
At decadence, we’ve skipped the coffee beans and use roasted cocoa beans for our delicious mochas. We then add the finest Belgian chocolate syrups in either white, dark or milk chocolate to give our mochas the rich, decadent flavor that has made mochas so popular for centuries.
