Motorists run over an average of 50 children a week in driveways and parking lots across the country. Many of those children survive. But at least two die, according the children’s advocacy group KidsandCars.org.
It’s the tragic truth that has led the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to consider new rules for rear visibility to improve vehicle safety for children.
The long-term fix, however will come through a change in driver behavior, namely safe driving. Perhaps that will spare families the heartache caused by this troubling fact: Seven out of 10 children killed were run over by a direct family member.
