When you start taking steps to winterize your home, don’t forget the ceiling fan. On some models of ceiling fans, there are two settings, one for summer and one for winter, that could be saving you money. During summer you want to create a breeze that cools your skin. So your blades should be rotating in a counter-clockwise motion. In the chilly winter months, you want to move the hot air near the ceiling down to you, so your blades should be rotating in a clockwise motion.
Although ceiling fans themselves are not actually heating or cooling a room, the air that the blades are turning is. Also, depending upon if your fan is on the right setting, you could be saving money on your electric bill.
If you want to test your ceiling fan, here are a few tips. First note if there is a setting for summer and winter. If so, follow the product directions. However, if product directions are absent, then here are some tips. On the first setting, see where the air movement is detected. Then make a reference note for seasonal change. In the summer, air should be circulating from underneath the fan. In the winter, the fan should push air up and draw the hot air from the ceiling down to make the temperature more comfortable.
