Why use moss as a main element in landscaping?

Bridge over the pond in traditional japanese garden desingSome people are trading in traditional grass for lush, colorful moss. Skeptical? Fans of moss in landscaping say it has many benefits.

For one thing, moss requires very little water for survival. One source says that while a regular, average size lawn requires 10,000 gallons of water per year to remain lush and healthy, moss needs only one percent of that.  Another plus, moss thrives in the shade, whereas most types of grass do not.  And also, weeds don’t grow where moss grows.

Replacing an entire lawn with moss may seem unrealistic to some. But perhaps a moss garden would be a reasonable way to landscape a shady, moist area in your yard. It can be used alone or in conjunction with native plants and shrubs for a natural looking landscape.

Moss is touted for its ability to provide peace and tranquility. Considering incorporating moss into your landscaping? Check out some tips on moss at Moss Acres.com. You can even purchase a Moss Starter Kit if you’re ready to give it a try.
