What millennial employees are looking for from their employers

The conundrum that is a millennial doesn’t really need to be a conundrum after all. Millennials are pretty straightforward once you take the time to understand what drives them, what’s important to them, and how they feel about a particular topic.

Workplace dynamics is a hot topic that’ll perhaps always be around to debate. What does one look for from their employer? What do millennials look for from their employer? We break down the top desires. millennials

Work/Life Balance
The years of the millennial are vast. Some millennials are having children and making home purchases while still others are enjoying the nightlife scene on the weekends. No matter which one your employee falls into, there’s a common denominator: interests outside of the workplace. Millennial employees, no matter what the ‘life’ part of their work/life equation entails, want to feel like they can enjoy their time away from work. Major points if you are understanding of personal appointments, the desire to work remotely and a flexible work schedule that doesn’t adhere to a strict 9-to-5.

Culture Fit
Nowadays it’s not enough to go to work, do what’s required of you and go home. Millennials want to have a relationship with the people they’ll be spending 40 hours a week with. Despite growing up in a very internet (and social media) driven world, we all still want and need face-to-face human interaction. Millennials want to know that when they come into work, they’ll be surrounded by people who they can get along with on a personal level. A great personal relationship makes for wonderful working relationships.

Community and Charity
More than ever before, employees are choosing employers for their commitment to real-world issues, whether that be on a global, national or local scale. Millennials want to know that their employer is contributing in some way to the greater good. If you aren’t already, your organization can start small by becoming involved with a local charity. A perfect jumping off point is Giving Tuesday. Occurring in November, it’s a global day of giving that has a big social media presence and focus (another great way to connect with your millennial workforce).

Studies have shown that if you provide an environment for your millennial employee that’ll let them thrive and feel like a part of something bigger than themselves, all while providing a flexible working arrangement and adopting new technologies, you’ll have earned a loyal employee for many years to come.
