Low section viewWe hear again and again that the keys to a healthy lifestyle are maintaining a healthy weight, participating in physical activity, and eating a balanced diet. Many of us struggle with one or more of these three keys. And, let’s face it, even though we know that physical activity is vital for overall health and wellness, starting a workout routine can be incredibly daunting. But, the truth is simple. Exercises, such as walking briskly for at least 30 minutes per day, can significantly boost your quality of life.

No tricky workout routines needed. No elaborate workout gear required. Just you and a sturdy pair of workout shoes! You don’t need to buy an expensive gym membership. You don’t need to buy tennis rackets and tennis balls. And, you can walk pretty much anywhere. Think about it — just 30 minutes a day of walking. That’s all. No longer will you have a hard time breathing when climbing stairs or walking up a hill!

“Walking is really powerful medicine,” according to Miriam Nelson, a professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. “Exercise targets so many different aspects of health.”

Nelson explained that people need to increase the amount they walk and how quickly. Young couple holding hands and walking a dog in a parkAnd, making that happen may not be as difficult as you think. Do you have errands to accomplish? Walk instead of drive. Do you have a dog that your spouse usually walks? Change your routine and take your pet to the park instead of sitting in front of the computer screen all day. Going to the grocery store? Park in a spot furthest from the entrance instead of snagging the nearest open space.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises people of all ages to exercise at least 2.5 hours every week at a moderate intensity. Brisk walking meets these requirements. After you develop a regular walking routine, introduce some muscle-strengthening workouts, such as crunches, push-ups or lifting weights. Before you know it, you’ll have a regular routine of both aerobic and muscle-strengthening exercises.

Remember, you don’t have to start off pushing your body to the limit. Ease into your new routine, and one year from now, you’ll be surprised how far you’ve come!
