It’s inevitable, there are certain, natural physiological changes that take place in our body as we age. Changes in nearly every single one of our organs have the potential to occur and specific diseases and conditions become more likely. Because of all these changes and how they affect us emotionally, our mental health can also be affected.
One of the best ways to combat these changes is by maintaining a healthy brain. A properly functioning brain leads to a properly functioning body. We’re old enough to know that the brain is the boss of the body; it controls just about everything we do. It affects mood, organ and muscle efficiency, and generally speaking, can make you better at whatever task you perform (not to mention nearly every other aspect of human biology, anatomy, and physiology).
Two great and easy ways to keep this very significant organ fit are regular exercise, an increase in reading, and a healthy diet.
1. Regular exercise
Regardless of the routine, consistency is the most important thing. Regular physical exercise promotes the efficient delivery of oxygen to the brain. This alone could improve and help maintain cognitive abilities, reaction times, and memory.
Even light to moderate exercise has been show to help prevent or delay the onset of disease, manage stress and improve mood.
2. Reading
Recent research has shown that reading not only increases your interests in their surrounding world and expands their cultural horizons, but it also provides some significant neurological benefits like an increase of blood flow beyond normal brain-function regions and into areas responsible for logic and problem-solving.
Regular reading has also been shown to help relieve stress and anxiety, prevent brain disorder like Alzheimer’s Disease, increase concentration levels and improve memory.
Staying vibrant as we age is something important to all of us. If these two simple things could help with this, why wouldn’t we do it? It’s just too easy not to give it a try.
