Do you have an office party to attend during the holidays this year? Most people have some level of anxiety about spending their time in social settings with coworkers and bosses, if only because they feel the pressure to impress.
Holiday parties – and really, any other social occasion where you’re expected to network and stay professional – don’t have to be just another grind. This year, give yourself the gift of a relaxing experience by following a few simple ground rules.
1) Attendance is mandatory. As with most things in life, showing up is what counts. Put in the face time and build relationships – it’s a critical part of what makes you successful. Be sure to mingle, too. A simple ‘hello’ and an acknowledgement will go a long way with most people. (They’re probably outside of their comfort zone, too!) You can leave early, but be sure you let your boss know ahead of time and don’t forget to thank your hosts before you leave.
2) While you’re at the party, don’t talk shop. Keep your conversations merry and light. Safe subjects include asking what people’s plans are for the upcoming holiday or whether they’ve got something fun scheduled for any upcoming time off. People love to talk about themselves, so you’re sure not to bore or (worse) offend. Don’t gossip, either. It’s in poor taste and will earn you a negative reputation.
3) If you bring a plus one, choose your guest wisely. The behavior of your guest will reflect on you, so be sure the person is well behaved.
4) Don’t eat or drink too much. You don’t want to be uncomfortable or run the risk of mumbling at someone with your mouth full during an introduction. Also, one of the biggest blunders people make is drinking just a little too much. Career experts recommend you set yourself a one or two drink limit.
5) Dress appropriately. This is still a professional event, so business casual dressed up with a few fun accessories is going to be your best bet.
