It’s the season for hanging holiday lights and decorations on your home. Here are some tips for making sure the process is uncomplicated and injury-free.
First, choose the right lights. Incandescent lights, icicle lights, net lights, LED lights and solar LED lights are all different options for outside decoration. Be sure to read up on each type to decide which one is right for you.
Second, be sure to measure the area where you plan to hang the lights to make sure you have enough. And don’t forget to have at least one extension cord on hand. Hang lights with nails and plastic hooks instead of staples. If your home is more than one story, make sure you have a sturdy ladder and a spotter.
Before you even take the lights out of storage or the package, get your replacement bulbs ready. Plug each strand in before hanging them. It’s better to find out if any bulbs are out before you try to hang them! Also, make sure you are using outdoor lights, not indoor ones. Same goes for extension cords. Double check all cords for fraying, too. And make sure that while you’re hanging your lights, you never go near electrical or cable wires.
Also, make sure that you’re ready to properly store your lights and decorations once the season is over. Shallow containers are best for off-season storage. The more shallow the container, the less likely the bulbs are to break.
Finally, take your time when you start to deck the halls so that you stay safe. According to the Center for Disease Control, 12,500 people each year are treated for injuries such as falls, cuts, and shocks related to holiday lights and electrical decorations. Don’t let one of them be you. Happy decorating!
