Three Ways to Include Your Baby’s Father in Your Pregnancy

A shot of a happy asian couple expecting for their unbornIt used to be that the nine months of pregnancy were pretty much the new mom’s territory. But those days are over, because in our current culture many new dads need and want to be part of the process – which is a very good thing!

Indeed, most expecting moms love the support and companionship that comes from having their guys involved. It strengthens their relationship, and also helps to prepare the father-to-be for his role, new responsibilities, and (yes!) even the joys of parenting. But how do you make your man feel included before the baby even arrives? Here are three great ideas to make it easy for the father-to-be to get involved.

Invite him to female-only events

Some events, such as baby showers, were formerly reserved for the expecting mom and her female friends and family. However, it’s become more common to invite close male friends and family — especially the dad! Inviting the new dad to festivities formerly known as “girls only” will keep him from feeling left out, and make him part of the fun right from the start.

Take him to doctor’s appointments

When you’re expecting, it seems like there’s an OB/GYN visit every other week! Don’t be afraid to ask your guy to tag along. New moms need moral support, and it’s not uncommon for frequent doctor visits to make you nervous. Also, there’s a better chance both you will retain information the doctor gives you during a visit, and remember to ask the right questions.

Invite him to go shopping

A day at the mall might not be every guy’s idea of fun, but new babies need a lot of stuff! Shopping to prepare for your new baby can make the whole idea of parenthood seem more “real.” If frilly clothes and tiny booties aren’t your guy’s thing, put him in charge of the more ‘manly’ merchandise. Let him find the car seats with high safety ratings, and child-proofing tools and gadgets.
