Three tips for better client communication

47426286_MAs the owner of a construction firm, it’s your responsibility to communicate clearly and on a regular basis with clients. While this might seem obvious, it’s often easier said than done. That being said, there are three simple tactics that can help you strengthen your skills, allowing you to build stronger relationships. Let’s dive in!

Speak in clear, understandable terms. The construction and building industry are full of slang terms and jargon. While you and your co-workers might understand the lingo, chances are good your customers don’t. Speak to them in clear, commonsense terms. The better you can illustrate the work that you’ll be performing, the less likely you are to run into communication breakdowns later on.

Be an active listener. Active listening requires you to really listen and then understand what someone is trying to say. It sounds simple in concept, but it’s far more difficult to practice in a real-time setting. During the construction process, your clients will likely have questions and concerns. It’s important that you are able to empathize with them and understand where they’re coming from. Practicing your active listening skills can make this process much easier.

Define your terms clearly. When you start a new project, do you have clients sign an agreement or contract? If not, you should. Clearly establishing guidelines for a particular project keeps everyone involved on the same page.

By making simple adjustments like these, you can ensure your clients stay happy for years to come. Good luck!
