Can you feel it? The ocean breeze on your face. Can you see it? The blue ocean in front of you. Can you hear it? The lapping waves. What does this image mean to you? Does it give you a sense of relief?
For some people, traveling to the beach reduces stress, while others may prefer the mountains or a cool cityscape. No matter what your ideal trip includes, you can feel good about it because vacation is good for you.
We are sometimes too quick to put off vacation. We view it as an unnecessary luxury, something we do when the timing is right or when the money lines up just perfectly. However, putting off vacation may actually be harmful to your health.
Taking vacation can relieve stress and help boost your energy. It can help you unwind from your daily responsibilities. It allows your mind and body a reprieve. Relieving stress can reduce muscle tension (and lead to pain reduction), it can help you sleep better, and reduce headaches. Studies have even suggested that vacations are beneficial for your heart health.
Are you concerned about taking time off of work? Traveling can actually help you become a better worker, because it can increase your productivity. Your mind gets drained, but traveling allows you to re-focus and re-energize.
There are numerous other benefits. It can boost your self-confidence, when you have to deal with things that don’t go as planned. You have the potential of meeting new people. It may even motivate you to be more active. Consider the activities you might participate in on vacation versus at home. You may find yourself burning more calories because of your adventures and most definitely, you’re expanding your worldview and wealth of experiences.
It’s time we stop looking at travel as just a luxury, instead, make it a point to vacation more, even if that means finding an affordable option. If time is an issue, try to (at the very least) fit in a day trip to a state park or a local museum … anything you feel would give you a reprieve from your daily schedule.
So, whether your adventure lands you on a beach or hiking a nature trail, enjoy it! Don’t feel bad about vacationing, because sometimes you just need a break to boost your health.
