Screen Shot 2013-10-10 at 7.56.19 PMMost of us have been taught from the time we were little to brush our teeth and floss every day. Since we do it every day, there can’t be much we don’t know about it, right? Think you know everything there is to know about brushing your teeth? See if you can answer these True/False questions about good oral hygiene.

TRUE OR FALSE? You clean the inside and outside surfaces of your teeth using the same motion — vertically, using a back and forth motion. The answer? FALSE! You hold the brush vertically and use a back and forth motion for the inside surfaces, but the outside surfaces should be brushed at a 45-degree angle using a circular motion.

TRUE OR FALSE? Flossing is not as important as brushing. FALSE again! You should brush and floss daily. Both are responsible for removing bacteria that cause bad breath and decay.

TRUE OR FALSE? Eating starchy foods such as crackers, bread, cookies, and candy causes the bacteria in your mouth feed on it. TRUE! These foods produce acids which attack your teeth for up to 20 minutes or more.

TRUE OR FALSE? Cavities are the number one cause of tooth loss in adults over the age of 35. FALSE! Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is the leading factor. Brushing and flossing can prevent cavities AND keep your gums healthy!

And, of course, it’s important to see your dentist for a professional cleaning twice a year. For more information about the importance of your overall oral hygiene and tips for staying healthy, visit our website.
