Are you using your smartphone to search out and apply for your next IT position? If you’re like most job seekers, the answer is “Yes”! Many professionals are using their mobile devices to work, and to stay on top of new opportunities – even after regular business hours.
Consider this: According to a recent article posted on LinkedIn, at least one-third of members visit the site from their mobile device. In addition, more than half of LinkedIn members who’ve used their mobile devices to apply for jobs have never applied from their desktop!
To help you keep on top of the latest and best ways to maximize your job search efforts, here at Market Street Talent we’ve put together some basic tips for your mobile job search.
- Take advantage of notifications and alerts. You can sign up for text and email notifications of new job postings through many job sites. Apps such as TweetMyJobs will also flag relevant job matches via email, text and social media. All you have to do is sign up.
- Use a job site app to apply from your phone. If you’ve emailed yourself a copy of your resume and save it in the In Box on your phone, you can forward it to prospective employers. Also remember to set up a professional signature on your phone (NOT ‘Sent from my iPhone’) to instantly get your contact information out and put your best foot forward.
- Check out the LinkedIn mobile app to use your phone for networking. This simple step will instantly ensure that you’re always up to date with your network. You can also more easily update your profile, view and save jobs, and do quick research on companies of interest.
To get started, check out some of the great apps from CareerBuilder, Indeed, SimplyHired, LinkUp, LinkedIn, Monster, BeKnown, Hidden Jobs, Now Hiring, Resume PRO, Pocket Resume.
We’ve found the LinkedIn app to be most helpful, so here are some basics on how to use it: After you download the app you can find jobs with the search box that appears when you tap the LinkedIn logo. A menu will appear with options for both the jobs search box and a “Jobs Recommended For You” section. From there you can submit your application.
You can also use the LinkedIn app to save jobs to access later, if you want to apply from your desktop computer. For more information about how the app works, visit the LinkedIn mobile help page here.
Although you’ll still want to use your desktop to access many job application websites, these apps will help make your job search more convenient and accessible. You’ll find more information about using apps to your advantage in these great articles with job search tips and tools here.
