Let’s face it, most of us have had that annoying boss. The one who breathes down your neck as he micromanages your every move. The one who demands you meet an unexpected deadline. Or the one who fires you for not giving in to his ridiculous whims. But become your own boss, and you can check your “kick me” sign at the door. Not only will you lose your doormat status, but there’s a few other perks to working for yourself.
Blessed freedom, baby. While having your own business can be challenging and isn’t for everyone, you have what many take for granted until they no longer have it––freedom. Yes, as a business owner you will still have the daily grind of a workday sometimes just like everyone else. You will still face looming deadlines that demand attention. But the elbow room allows you to grow yourself as a person according to your rules.
Manage your own time. For some of us, we simply function better during non-standard working hours. Diehard night owls can certainly attest to this: They crave the peace, quiet and creative mental focus of the wee hours of the morning that is so elusive in a regular 9-to-5 job. Others just love the ability to attend their daughter’s afternoon ballet practice and make up the hours in the evening.
Wear what you want. True, when meeting with prospects or customers, nice clothes are encouraged. But sometimes you just want to be able to wear your favorite skinny jeans or even a pair of shorts without worrying about a stuffy dress code.
Get a bigger slice of your hard-earned profits. Business owners always get a larger cut of the profits than their employees, because, well it’s their company. Hence the reason it’s more challenging to become very wealthy if you work for someone else. Working for yourself means no longer having to rely on the luck of the draw with your boss to garner a raise. When you rule the roost, you see more of the fruits of your labor in addition to having the incentive to work harder for greater success.
