Setting a resolution to be happier is actually easier than it sounds. Researchers are finding that most people benefit from taking the same small steps to increase well-being. This time of year, most of us make goals to break bad health habits, save money or lose weight, and then we break our resolutions because change can be hard.

Instead of beating yourself up because you can’t stop doing something, this year all you have to do is add in a few simple daily activities that are practically guaranteed to make your life better by improving your health, relationships and self-confidence. Here are some easy ideas that are sure to increase your happiness:

  • Drink more water. Research has shown that even a mild case of dehydration makes people hungry, cranky, gloomy and pessimistic. Make it easy on yourself by starting your day with a glass, and take a few sips before and after every meal.
  • Get outside more often. A daily dose of sunlight will help boost your immunity to illness, strengthen your bones, improve your mood and even help your body regulate your sleep cycle. Your body needs a little sunlight each day to produce enough Vitamin D, an essential nutrient. Aim to start your day with your blinds open, and make it a habit to step outside for a few minutes at lunchtime. You’ll be amazed at the difference this makes!
  • Find time to play. Free time, healthy relationships and exercise are all important for our emotional well-being and physical health. This year, make these things a priority by setting a goal to spend at least two hours on a weeknight and one afternoon on the weekend just hanging out. If you keep that time just for yourself, you can be spontaneous and choose to fill it with activities that are fun and meaningful for you. Skip the TV and use the time to hike, shoot hoops with friends or join a sports team. Invite a friend to go along sometimes. You’ll build your friendships, increase your fitness and get a buzz from setting your own priorities.
  • Screen your technology time. Once a week, unplug from email, text, TV and work-related phone calls. Use the time to volunteer in your community or train with a team. Anytime you connect with real people, you’re going to increase your sense of well-being. Researchers have also found that volunteering is good for you, and training with a sports team will improve your fitness levels by motivating you to work harder.
