The best diets for fiftysomethings

When it comes to diets, everybody has their opinion on which is best. There are, however, three diets that have proven to be great for heart health, a necessity for fiftysomethings.

So, if you’re in your 50s, or if you have a fiftysomething in your life, consider the following three diets. Check ‘em out, and see which one might work for you. Your ticker will thank you.

The Mediterranean Diet. Devotees of this diet focus on eating lots of fruits, veggies, whole grains and a moderate amount of healthy fats, such as nuts and olive oil. Fish and poultry are preferred over red meat, and dairy products are used sparingly. Drinking wine with meals, however, is a go. So, bottoms up!

The Plant-Based Diet. “The all-plant diet that President Bill Clinton endorses is actually code for a vegan diet that eschews all animal products and also limits fat, including such heart-healthy ones as olive oil, avocados and nuts,” writes Maureen Callahan on the Huffington Post.

The Anti-Inflammatory Diet. Depending on which website or book you read, this diet varies dramatically. “Foods to avoid could include everything from omega 6 fatty acids found in vegetable oils, sugar and processed foods to common allergens, like soy, peanuts and wheat.”
