That’s brisk: Tips for staying active during cooler fall weather

Do the cooler temperatures of fall and winter discourage you from staying active? It can be hard to want to get outside for a walk when it’s darker, colder and wetter than we’d like!

But there are plenty of ways to stay active, have fun and get a move on during the cooler months – even when the sun isn’t shining. Here are a few tips to help get you through it!02-friends-COMP-3115428-1

Start by meeting up with friends as an opportunity for activity. Fitness expert Peg Jordan, PhD, RN and author of The Fitness Instinct, recommends that you “[try] to link exercise with happiness, social activity, and escape.”

Instead of going to a movie or out to eat, why not spend some of that time shopping instead? Even if you’re just walking around the mall, that counts as an activity! Or even better, grab a friend and the two of you can try something new together – like a sport.

You could take up jogging, try rock climbing on an indoor wall, swim laps or shoot some hoops at the local recreation center. Working out with a friend is motivating, and all of these activities can be a great way to socialize, work off some pent up energy and increase your fitness level.

Why not take it one step further and join an adult sports league in your community? You’re sure to find a little something for everyone, and most sports groups meet about once a week, so you’ve built in a regular exercise session with very little time commitment.

Did you know Murray City Parks and Recreation offers adult sports leagues? They’re a fun way to stay active and maybe even make some new friends. This fall, Murray City Parks and Recreation is hosting 11-intervals-COMP-384886

And even if organized sports aren’t your thing, you can still find a friend and decide on a regular time to work out at the gym each week. That way, you’ll manage to find time to socialize and still keep yourself in shape.
