Stay healthy at the gym by avoiding gym germs

Talk about irony! You go to the gym to be healthy, yet gyms can be some of the most germ-ridden places on earth. The dripping sweat! The shared workout machines! The locker rooms!!! It’s more important than ever that gyms be kept as clean as possible.

  • Inspect the gym before joining. Before you sign on the dotted line, make sure you feel good about your new gym’s housekeeping practices. In fact, go a little “germaphobe” during your inspection if you need to. In addition to cleanliness, check to see if the gym is well-ventilated. “An air-tight gym becomes a prime spot for airborne infections,” Women’s Health points out.
  • Don’t go barefoot. ”The shower, sauna, hot tubs and steam rooms are the perfect post-workout treat, but they’re a breeding ground for germs,” Women’s Health warns. “Wear flip-flops at all times to avoid irritating conditions like athlete’s foot.”
  • Cover up cuts. Before your workout, be sure to cover up any cuts with a bandage. “Open wounds — no matter how small — are all bacteria need to get into your body,” Women’s Health advises.
  • Bring your own water bottle. Drinking fountains are a major headquarters for germs. Don’t risk your health in a moment of post-workout thirst.
