Gratitude is defined as “The quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.” What does this really mean? True gratitude is the daily act of counting your blessings.
Today, we live in a world of instant gratification, rather than instant gratitude. We zip through our lives, responding to the buzz in our pockets. We taste fruit and spices from around the world, wear colorful and comfortable clothes, and have access to more information than a scholar could consume in a lifetime. So why are we unhappy? It is because we forget to give thanks.
Thanksgiving is a time to share and spread that gratitude with the people you love most. Here are some simple ways to say thank you to your loved ones and the world you live in.
1. Do something nice for your parents.
The number one thing to be thankful for is life itself. Give thanks to your parents and grandparents with a thoughtful handmade gift. A christmas wreath or homemade cornucopia will show that you took the time to make something special for someone who helped you become who you are today. Even a handwritten card or letter will be cherished and appreciated by your loved ones.
2. Take care of the planet. If it weren’t for this lovely blue marble, you’d have no place to live. Take some time to give thanks to the Earth, this season. Be sure to reduce, re-use, and recycle whenever possible. Take public transportation or a bike when the weather permits. Start a compost pile to reduce your landfill waste and give your lawn and garden some super nutritious fertilizer. There are many ways to preserve and thank the planet, all year round.
3. Have a spa day
What a wonderful body you’ve got! Your lungs breathe in the air to bring oxygen to your blood. Your mind solves puzzles and recalls all the wonderful holiday memories. Your legs carry you wherever your heart desires. Show your body that you love it with a spa day. All you need is a bubble bath and your favorite seasonal drink. Maybe you could even splurge on a massage. Just take care of yourself during this holiday season. You’ve earned it.
4. Stop and smell the turkey
Many people believe that true happiness lies “in the moment.” Focusing on the present can help you appreciate the little things that make up your everyday life. Take a moment to really notice the taste of your food and appreciate the company around you.
5. Show children how to be grateful
The best way to learn something yourself, is to teach someone else. Find a simple craft project, based on the child’s age, to teach gratitude. You can create a thank-you tree, a gratitude chain, or some fun thankful placemats, with nothing more than paper, scissors and glue.
How will you be a gratitude role model this year?
