Scissors: Making the cut since ancient times

But have you ever thought about where these handy, handheld clippers actually came from? You may be surprised because over the years scissors have really cut a place deep in history.

Early scissors were discovered in Egypt dating as far back as 1500 BC and were constructed from one singular piece of metal. What kinds of crafts were the ancient Egyptians keen on creating?

Later it was discovered that the Romans also had an affinity for all things scissors after cross-bladed pairs, mimicking modern styles, were unearthed in Rome as early as 100 AD. Scissors are said to be mentioned in records associated with artisans and guilds and were a favorite among the Romans because of their fascination with clean lines and simple construction.

Where the Romans went, so did their scissors. After trade routes developed, the Roman’s scissor secret came out in the open as soldiers traveled back and forth between Europe. Soon tailors and guild members created a market as they saw just how helpful scissors can be when it comes to cutting precisely.

And that’s just a snippet of how scissors came onto the scene. Could you imagine creating your favorite craft without the help of your scissors? It would be impossible as nothing else can really make the cut.
