Ring in new opportunities with a holiday season job search

Happy Holidays! It’s officially the last full week before Christmas, and many of us are looking forward to spending time off with friends, family and loved ones. We know your to-do list is long, but if you’re searching for new professional opportunities in IT we just wanted to share a friendly reminder that now is a very good time to be working your job search.

If you just started looking for a new position, you haven’t missed your window of opportunity. You’ll want to note that department heads often make end-of-year hires to take advantage of any remaining budget funding – which means that the last remaining weeks of December are not the time to take a holiday from your search. In a recent recent report published at CIO.com, the experts agree that “tis the season” for job seekers.

“It may sound strange, but the holiday season might work to your advantage… There’s often a flurry of hiring right before the fiscal year ends as organization have new structures and positions to fill,” said Dale Carnegie Training senior vice president of marketing Piera Palazzolo in the CIO article written by Sharon Florentine.

How can you use this information to your advantage? During the holidays, many job seekers put their search on hold. If you’re still putting yourself out there, you’ll automatically stand out from the crowd. In addition, this season rings in a wealth of opportunities for networking.

The holidays are a natural time of year to send a personal note with seasonal greetings. When you reconnect with people – colleagues, friends, and extended family – it’s perfectly acceptable to let them know that you’re searching for a new position.

Also feel free to send out your resume during your down time. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t hear back right away. It might take a little longer to get a reply because people are taking more time off for family gatherings and celebrations, but your efforts won’t go unnoticed.

While you’re at home with a little extra free time, it’s also a great idea to spruce up your resume.
