Remodeling projects that will boost your home’s resale value

18091737_SLooking for a project that will boost your home’s resale value?

If you want to get the biggest bang for your buck, try replacing the entryway door. You’ll recoup more money through that project than through replacing shingles, swapping windows or undertaking any other kind of remodeling, according to Remodeling magazine.

The average payback for a steel door: 102.1 percent. Not bad.

As for the return rate on other popular home-improvement projects? Don’t expect to recoup all of your money, but here are some household renovations that fare better than others at resale:

  • Replacing the garage door: Unless you decide to install a high-end door, this project will return 83.9 percent of the cost once you put it on the market.
  • Adding a wood deck: Although you may spend $10,000-plus on a new deck, you can expect to get 72.8 percent back when you sell the home. That’s the same percentage you’ll get from a minor kitchen remodel.
  • Residing your home with vinyl: Not only will this exterior project improve your home’s curb appeal, but remodelers can expect to recoup 72.4 percent of the money.
  • Replacing windows: Whether you choose vinyl or wood frames, windows will add a fair amount to your home’s value. You’ll recover about 72 percent of your replacement cost.
