Protecting your home during hurricane season

If you’ve just moved to Florida, welcome to our great state … and to hurricane season. June 1st marks the official start of hurricane season, which lasts through November. Even if you’ve weathered other natural events, getting your home hurricane ready is quite different than say prepping for a snow storm. If this is your first – or tenth – hurricane season in our fair state, it never hurts to have a refresher on hurricane prep basics. 10517680 - an image of a hurricane off the east coast of the united states.

  1. Invest in shutters. One of the best ways to protect your home from hurricane force winds and minimize damage is to board up your doorways and windows with storm-proof panels or shutters. There are many types available, such as plywood, metal or accordion style, regardless, all require ample preparation ahead of time.
  2. Secure your garage. While your’re securing your windows and doors, don’t forget about your garage door. Hurricane winds can blow in the door and cause destruction inside the home. You can reinforce your garage door with kits designed to keep them safe. If you’re unsure, ask a neighbor or local hardware store pro.
  3. Bring in outdoor furnishings. Porch chairs, pool loungers, potted plants can all easily become flying objects during a storm. If it’s not locked down, your best bet is to bring it inside the home. Come up with a plan now for where you’ll store outdoor stuff.
  4. Check home insurance policies. Whether your home has renters or homeowners insurance, check the policies and keep them up to date. These policies could end up covering a lot should disaster strike. Update policies now in preparation.
  5. Install surge protection. Adding a power surge protector to your electrical panel can help to protect your appliances, air conditioner and more. The chances that power goes out during a storm is high, but with a surge protector that likelihood is lessened.
