Play it safe

30426115_MLike most of you this Fourth of July – and again July 24 for Pioneer Day – we’re going to take the day off and celebrate our country and state’s founding days. But you won’t catch us throwing caution to the wind!

Whether you’re hitting the road or gathering at home with family and friends, it’s important to play it safe. After all, no one wants to squeeze a trip to the emergency room into their festivities.

Here are a few precautions to keep the summer fun and games safe and sound:

Protect, repel and hydrate. Lather on the sunscreen, preferably with an SPF of 30 or higher. Carefully apply the insect repellent, spraying it on your hands to safely apply it to your face. (Hopefully, if you haven’t left standing water around your yard, mosquitoes will be a no-show!) And make sure you have plenty of cool water available; you want to keep everyone hydrated.

• Grill and picnic like a pro. Are you grilling up an outdoor feast? Here’s an unbelievable recipe to check out. And remember, never put cooked meat back on the plate that held the raw meat! Be careful, too, about those summer salads. Keep them cool, nesting the bowls in bigger bowls of ice cubes, and get them back in the refrigerator within two hours.

Toss fireworks safely. Fireworks are a Fourth of July tradition and you’ll find plenty in Salt Lake City’s holiday plans. You’ll want to be careful when lighting your own sparklers and bottle rockets and such. If you are going to light up the skies, keep water and sand available to quickly extinguish rogue embers. And maintain your distance from duds; you never know if a slow burn will later set it off.

All of us here at Granger-Hunter Improvement District wish you a happy, safe holiday!
