Look around your home. Chances are there is at least one item made from plastic within reach. Plastic is a material we often take for granted in our everyday lives. But it doesn’t just appear out of thin air. There is a complex process behind the products.
Let’s start with the origin. Believe it or not, most plastic is derived from oil. Oil contains carbon and other elements. In fact, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and chlorine are among them. These elements are taken from water, oil, gas, coal and plants. So, in a way, when you breathe you are taking in particles that may become part of plastic someday.
Plastic is touted for many qualities, especially for its lightness and durability. Plastic is generally lightweight, which means it can be easily manipulated. While malleable, it is strong at the same time. That’s why seat belts are made out of plastic. You wouldn’t want them to be made from a weak material. Plastic can truly save lives!
