Plan ahead to travel well

Happy family going on holidays by airplaneThe idea of a vacation is fabulous, but the reality for most of us is that the traveling part can be incredibly difficult. And when you add the extra stress and tension that comes from chronic pain, it can be more than unbearable. But it shouldn’t have to be. Here are some tips to get you back to traveling.

Tip #1: Be organized
It’s important to plan out your trip beforehand. Call ahead to your hotel to ask questions about their services and ask for any accommodations you might need. Plan out your sightseeing plans before you go, so you can better gauge how much energy you might have in a day. Make lists of what you might need while you’re on vacation and give yourself plenty of time to buy everything before you leave.

Tip #2: Take care of your body first
Make sure you’re getting plenty of rest. Even though you may be somewhere exciting and want to plan very full days, you need to remember to make time for sleep. It will make it more enjoyable. Also, keep yourself comfortable by wearing loose-fitting clothing while you travel. If you have to choose, comfort should trump fashion when you’re on the go. Also, make sure you are open about your circumstances with those accompanying you on your trip. They need to know what you will and won’t be able to do. Honesty is the best policy.

Tip #3: Luggage is key
Luggage can be very, very heavy. Make sure when lifting, you do it carefully. If you’re flying and using an overhead bin, lift the luggage from the ground to a seat and then into the overhead compartment or trunk. And don’t be afraid to ask someone for help, such as a flight attendant. That’s what they’re there for. Try packing as light as possible when you travel. The less you pack, the less you’ll have to lift.

Tip #4: Plan ahead for medication
If you’re dealing with pain that involves medicinal treatment, it’s important to be on top of your medication while on vacation. Make sure you will have enough for your entire trip. If you may run out, get a prescription from your doctor before you leave, so you can have it filled wherever you are. And always remember to keep your medication with you and in their individual containers. That way, you’ll know exactly where and what they are at all times.

Tip #5: Take advantage of pain relief tactics
Throughout your trip, remember to use ice and heat as you need it. Comfort is key. And you shouldn’t be afraid to take some time out of your trip to let your body rest. You may also consider a non-prescription pain patch if, just in case. Remember that your vacation will be so much more enjoyable if you take the time to stretch out your muscles or take a bath. Because traveling doesn’t need to be any more of a headache than it already is!
