Nixing Moths with Essential Oils

We’ve all pulled out a favorite sweater to find one (or many) moth holes. Or maybe you’ve even seen those little moths that like to live in your flour flying around your house. Encountering moths and your ruined goods is an unpleasant and sometimes discouraging experience.

Luckily, essential oils can help! As essential oil use grows, so does essential oil research. And some of that research is focused on using essential oils as repellents and insecticides.

A quick Google search turns up several research articles with positive findings using essential oils to battle bugs. In fact, at least a few studies claim that some oils will kill moths within 24 hours.

To try essentials oils in your own home to put a kibosh on moths, here’s what you need to know.

Essential oils that are believed to work in eliminating moths include oregano, lavender, cedarwood, peppermint and patchouli. But oregano may be your best bet.

There are three simple ways for application:

  1. Place a few drops of your essential oil of choice in a spray bottle. Fill the bottle the rest of the way with water and spray liberally in problem areas like closets and pantries. When spraying near food, make sure to use an essential oil that is meant for internal use.
  2. Use a diffuser as you would normally, making sure to move it near problem areas.
  3. Place a drop or two of the oil on a few cotton balls, place those in drawers, closets and cupboards, and let it diffuse on its own into the air.
