Most dangerous cities in America

14192693_SIf you’re going to buy a home, you might want to avoid Flint, Michigan. Why? Because it ranks as the nation’s most dangerous city, according to the latest batch of FBI crime data.

With a population of just over 100,000 and a murder tally of 52 people last year, Flint probably isn’t a place that will make you feel warm and fuzzy at night.

But settling out West seems to be a safe bet. Only two of America’s crime capitals – Oakland and Stockton, Cali. – are located west of the Missouri River, based on an analysis by 24/7 Wall St. From the look of it, communities with high poverty and high unemployment have the highest crime rates.

So here’s a look at the most dangerous places to live:

  1. Flint, Michigan – 23.4 violent crimes per 1,000 people
  2. Detroit, Michigan – 21.4 violent crimes per 1,000 people
  3. St. Louis, Missouri  – 18.6 violent crimes per 1,000 people
  4. Oakland, California – 16.8 violent crimes per 1,000 people
  5. Memphis, Tennessee – 15.8 violent crimes per 1,000 people
  6. Little Rock, Arkansas – 14.9 violent crimes per 1,000 people
  7. Birmingham, Alabama – 14.8 violent crimes per 1,000 people
  8. Atlanta, Georgia – 14.3 violent crimes per 1,000 people
  9. Baltimore, Maryland – 14.2 violent crimes per 1,000 people
