If you are searching for a new method to gain greater income for retirement savings, options trading could be an innovative, fun way to increase your revenue. Options trading is essentially following a contract that gives a buyer the right to purchase a specific asset for a specified price on or before a particular date. Often the buyer has to set aside a down-payment, but has no obligation to go through with the final purchase of said asset.
Options trading has been in the news of late. At the end of October 2013, the options market underwent a malfunction, according to Bloomberg. Nasdaq OMX Group Inc. was forced to close down the options exchange five hours early due to a technical error. It was reported that a “significant increase in order entries inhibited the system’s ability to accept orders and disseminate quotes.”
Another problem that occurred on the stock market exchange was the inability to provide prices for benchmark stock indexes for about one hour on October 29. There is some concern that increasing trading across mostly automated venues may have made the securities market deficient in timely responses to trading activity.
“Any time you up the level of complexity, you up the risk of there being problems,” Christopher Rich, head options strategist at JonesTrading Institutional Services LLC, told the news source in a phone interview. “I don’t see that many advantages to having so many exchanges. It creates more opportunities for something to go wrong.”
Despite a potential malfunction, options trading can be a useful way for making extra money. Options trading may lead to a large profit if you can correctly anticipate the movement of stock prices.
