The holidays can be stressful for many of us. We face the rush of preparing for visits from our family, buying gifts, decorating, attending parties, and generally just trying to survive the holiday rush. How can we slow it down, and enjoy the time spent with families and friends?
It can be hard for all of us! But, here are three techniques to slow the holiday season down a little bit, so that you can enjoy it – and most importantly, really get to appreciate it.
Tip #1: Take the time to express your feelings. How often do we see our family all together? While it might feel corny, or even embarrassing, take the time to give that real hug. Spend time together in conversation, playing games, and enjoying the chance you get to be together. Tradition is important, but meaningful time spent together is even more important.
Tip #2: Tone down the gifts. Gift giving is important, and who doesn’t love watching someone open that present you spent so long searching for? But after a few more presents, most of us are just accumulating extras we don’t really need, and paper that needs to be thrown away. Instead of a bunch of gifts, find a way to give one meaningful gift that will mean more than a pile of stuff might.
Tip #3: Invite family to help prepare meals. Some of the best memories can be made as you work together to make something you will all enjoy together. Cleaning up is another opportunity to work together, to visit, and accomplish something together.
This holiday season, try these tips to slow your celebrations down just a bit. Make them meaningful for your family, and not just something that you have to get through. As you do, you will enjoy the holidays more than you ever have before.
