What does it mean to leave no trace? We’ve all heard the phrase. But what exactly does it mean when the scoutmaster asks us to leave no trace on a backing trip through the High Unitas? Or to leave no trace as we are spending the week at Camp Steiner?
The principle of “leave no trace” isn’t something from a spy movie. Rather, its a principle that has come to characterize the way that we, as members of Boy Scouts of America, care for the environment. We want to keep these rugged beauty of Utah backcountry looking pristine for decades to come.
So how do we leave no trace? Do we go without shoes? Do we climb through the trees? No. We are mindful of the environment, seeking to leave no trace of an amazing camping trip in Big Cottonwood Canyon or a water outing at Schofield Reservoir. Here are some tips on how to ensure your camping trip leaves no trace.
- Plan Ahead and Prepare: This lowers risks associated with weather and geography, provides campers with sufficient time to reach campsites and minimizes trash through meal planning.
- Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces: This limits damage to land, vegetation and communities of organisms. Understand the terrain you’ll visit and the preservation techniques required.
- Dispose of Waste Properly: This encourages proper sanitation and removes all trash for the benefit of future visitors.
- Leave What You Find: Enjoy the wonder of newfound rocks, animals and artifacts, but don’t bring them with you. This preserves the past.
- Minimize Campfire Impacts: Consider using a lightweight camp stove to avoid degrading a natural area or use an existing campfire ring to build a small fire with dead and downed wood.
- Respect Wildlife: Observe animals at a distance, don’t feed wild animals and remain quiet to prevent stressful encounters.
- Be Considerate of Other Visitors: Camp in small groups of people, avoid being noisy and travel quietly so others can enjoy their outdoor experience.
We all can—and should—play a part in protecting the beauty of our great country. Enjoy your next adventure with these great principles top of mind!
