The move is a go. So how do you put your children in the figurative driver’s seat of the moving van by explaining the relocation and ensuring they feel involved throughout the process? Here are three ways to help prepare your kids for the changes ahead:
Talk it over during a casual meal of pizza or other favorite dish. Assuming you’re taking a new job, share your excitement and feelings about the opportunities ahead. Also take plenty of time to answer questions and invite additional feedback. Having the kids write down their thoughts and initiating a family meeting during which each member gets to talk can be an effective strategy.
Find ways to celebrate the people you love and the places you’ve been. Throw a “see you soon” party involving your children’s friends. Give them an address book or other materials for storing contact information that they can use to keep in touch with friends, coaches and others after you’ve moved.
Build a team of adventurers. Moving isn’t all about leaving things behind—it’s also about new beginnings. Plan a trip to your new city so the whole family can learn more about it. Look for houses together if possible. Begin to sort through your things to determine what will come with you and have the kids plan out their rooms.
Make your destination exciting. Once you’ve arrived in your new destination, take your children to a new restaurant or fast-food chain they’ve never been to before. Take them to attractions in your new city. Even though you’ll have plenty of unpacking to do, pace yourself. Taking the time to show your children all the fun things to do in your new home could make all the difference!
