When is the last time you looked at the roof over your home? We mean, really looked at it? If you haven’t inspected for loose shingles, black streaks and tree damage in the past year, your roof is probably due for a maintenance inspection.
Here are some things to look for as you check to ensure that the roof over your head is as secure as it can be.
- Are trees growing too close to the roof? “Trees can cause a myriad of problems for roofs of all types,” writes Homeownernet.com. “Branches leaning on the roof will scratch and gouge roofing materials when they are blown by the wind; falling branches from overhanging trees can damage or even puncture shingles; and falling leaves can clog gutter systems causing water to back up into the attic or living spaces.” If you see tree branches colliding with your roof, trim them back as soon as possible to avoid damage.
- Are there streaks on the roof? Black or discoloring streaks indicate mold, algae or fungus. Before replacing with new shingles, the vegetation will need to be cleaned out.
- Are all the shingles intact? If shingles are missing, a house is susceptible to water damage. Also: look for weakened shingles, which can be torn off by wind gusts. “Since a deteriorated roof system only gets worse with time, once you discover the problem, you should take steps to repair the damage immediately” writes Homeownernet.com.
