How much is a beautifully manicured lawn or maybe a fantastic, overall landscape
design at your home really worth? Experts are saying that money spent to buy good landscaping will increase the property value of your home significantly!
The value of good landscaping starts with a beautiful environment to enjoy with friends and family. Beyond that, an investment in new landscaping can even add up to groundbreaking financial returns!
Bob Vila, a well known home improvement expert, recently published an article on the subject that explains how the money spent for good landscaping will grow your returns if you’re planning to sell your home: “A professionally landscaped property is a sure ticket to quick resale. It gives a home curb appeal, a sense of place and value.”
In the same article, Joan Honeyman, of Honeyman Landscape Architecture in Washington, D.C., explained it this way, “[Good landscaping] is the first thing you see. That first impression can add 20 percent to your home’s value, a figure that rivals the return on a new kitchen or bath.”
So how much should you spend before you can expect to see returns? The American Society of Landscape Architects recommends that homeowners invest about 10 percent of the home’s value in landscaping. For example, a homeowner with a property at the national median-value of about $213,000, should plan to budget about $10,000.
Beneficial landscape design elements can include “hardscaping” such as lighting, fences, garden paths, fire pits, swimming pools, ponds, terraces, decks and even outdoor rooms, in addition to more natural elements such as grasses, flowers, shrubs, trees and gardens.
The biggest pitfall many homeowners run into is the lack of an overall design plan for their property. Here’s a tip: hire a qualified landscape architect to help give the property a polished, complete design that takes into account all of the site and makes the elements work together.
A qualified designer will also provide you with a good maintenance plan to keep up the hard work that went into your lawn! For more information about how landscaping can add value to your home, read here!
