We’ve all seen the reality shows dedicated to home decor. They make it look oh-so-easy to transform your space into the most stylish home on the block. Interior design is practically common sense, right?
Well, let’s not forget that the homes we see on TV are being designed by … well, professional designers, so it’s not surprising many folks find it difficult to re-create what they’ve seen. Let’s check in with TV designer Taniya Nayak of HGTV’s Billion Dollar Block to learn her “home decor don’ts.”
1. Don’t shortchange your space. Just because your room is small doesn’t mean you should use tiny furniture — that’s a no-no. You’ll wind up making your room look even tinier.
2. Don’t copy. Gather ideas, but don’t be a copycat. Find your style, and own it.
3. Don’t forget to accessorize. We’re talking vases, photographs, pillows, candles, blankets. Just like when you get dressed up — accessorizing is a must.
4. Don’t push all your furniture against the wall. You don’t want your house feeling like a dentist’s office, do you?
5. Don’t jump the (paint) gun. Choosing a paint color should be your last decision.
