For decades, movies have been released with a red carpet event. Stars and filmmakers all get dressed up, then walk down said carpet while having their photos taken and answering questions about their outfits. And while we may not know the story as to why red carpets must be red (and very red at that), recent day movie releases are opting for different hues.
For example, the premiere of Smurfs 2 came with a very blue carpet for its stars to walk down, after the main characters’ skin tone, and Brave came with a green carpet release, likely in tribute to the Irish theme of the film. Latest to join the non-red carpet trend is Anchorman 2 with a burgundy carpet. The color is a reference to the main character’s last name (“Ron Burgundy”), and also his tendency to wear burgundy-colored suits.
While this trend not only gets its respective film a little more exposure, it can be said that altering the carpet color is an artistic choice. Event organizers evaluate which hue best represents each release, and roll out the carpet to make a statement!
You might say this trend is still on the “down low,” though. The practice is far from universal. That said, we know the next time we watch a movie release event, we’ll be checking out both the stars and the carpets under their feet!
