So, you landed an interview for a career in the beauty industry? Way to go! Now it’s time to prepare so you can put your best foot forward.
Here are are a few “dos” and “don’ts” to keep in mind to wow them:
Do:
- Do arrive 5-10 minutes early. This will give you time to collect your thoughts and focus.
- Do invest in a business suit or professional looking outfit. Like it or not, your clothing sends a message about who you are and what you’re about. Jeans or sweats are never OK.
- Do ask a lot of questions. It shows you are interested and thoughtful.
- Do send a thank you note after the interview. Hand-written is ideal.
- Do your homework. Familiarize yourself with the salon and its clientele.
Don’t:
- Don’t show too much skin, wear a lot of jewelry or display tattoos. When in doubt, more (clothes) is better.
- Don’t take a call or text during an interview. Your phone should be on silent.
- Don’t lie about your experience. It will only end up hurting you in the end.
- Don’t speak badly about a previous or current supervisor. It’s tacky.
- Don’t act desperate.
Remember, professionalism is always in style. If you’re unsure about how you’ll come across in an interview, practice beforehand, either in front of a mirror or a friend. You can only get better.
