Anyone who’s attempted to capture the image of an LED sign with a camera knows it is a notoriously difficult task.
While recent technology has vastly improved digital brightness and extended a sign’s longevity, often a sign owner doesn’t notice the slow degradation of an illuminated sign over time.
From a client’s perspective, they see the sign daily and usually do not give it much thought. Taking photographs of illuminated signage can better pinpoint the time when a sign needs a replacement.
Here’s how to capture an illuminated sign image. First, lower the shutter speed. Doing so may prevent those irritating bars that appear on the digital photo. Don’t forget to also change the ISO settings, because that’s what determines the level of light the shutter will take in. The detailed instructions for adjusting the shutter setting are here.
Next on the list is adjusting the camera’s F-stop. Consider the F-stop as akin to the human lens. The more light that comes in through the pupil, the more the image will appear washed out. Less light will cause a loss in clarity and sharpness but will allow more color saturation.
