When you’re hiring, finding the right talent is important. But in the current market, just as important is making the decision about whether to hire someone for a position long term, on a temporary contract basis, or if outsourcing might be the best option for your business.
Do you know what the benefits and drawbacks are in each case? Read on for some basic advice to follow when making the decision about hiring your next employee.
You’ll obviously want to seek temporary help – such as freelancers, flextime employees, consultants and independent workers – as a valuable resource for short-term projects. Their talent can benefit your business and will save you money in the process.
Contract employees can be a quick solution for heavy seasonal workloads and to bring in new, fresh ideas. You might also want to someone to hire for a full time position after a try before you buy scenario contract basis, because the right person will be eager to demonstrate her talents.
But before you make the decision, consider the drawbacks to hiring temporary help. If you bring in someone on a contract basis, you may not always be that person’s first priority. Freelancer workers and consultants are in business for themselves, and could have a number of other outside work projects.
A short-term hire might be less likely to take one for the team in your workplace, because they have their own interests and other work obligations. They could also leave for another position if they are looking for stability, because you haven’t given them a commitment long term.
For those reasons, if you’re looking for dedication and reliability the full time, long-term hire might be a better option.
Why? In a recent article on the subject published at Entreprener.com, Jason Mitchell, owner of social media marketing agency Movement Strategy in New York, shared his opinion on the biggest hidden benefit to hiring a full time employee over a contractor.
“You do better when a big part of someone’s life revolves around the company,” Mitchell said.
In addition, adding the right full time staff member will give you have more say in their workplace, work flow and employee hours. The price of the additional control is that you are on the hook for the costs of providing employee benefits.
Finally, outsourcing is an important option to exercise in the case that you have a need for highly specialized skills for an ongoing large-scale project. You’ll pay more, but in the long term it makes sense to bring on the expertise if the project is significant.
