Having a company party? Check your liability coverage

Is your club planning on hosting parties or other events this year? It’s a great time to check your club’s liability coverage. Serving alcohol can increase the chances your club will face a liability claim.

One of the biggest risks at any party – perhaps even the biggest risk — is alcohol. Each state has different laws regarding the liability of a “social host,” meaning a person or organization that serves alcohol to someone who is later involved in an accident. But many states, depending on the circumstances, may hold a company at least partially liable for injuries or damages caused by an inebriated patron. (Your attorney can help you determine your specific risk.) With that in mind, you’ll want to have specific policies in place regarding the dispensing of alcohol and make sure your club’s employees are thoroughly trained in those rules.

What about employee parties? Companies can be held liable for the actions of their employees, too. With that in mind, if you’re having a holiday party for employees, you may want to consider serving only non-alcoholic drinks or limiting the number of alcoholic drinks each employee may consume at your party.

The bottom line: If you’re planning on an event at your club and are considering serving alcohol, you may want to check with your insurance agent first to see what type of liability coverage is offered under your business insurance policies.
