Although it might be hard to believe, another seasonal change is just around the corner. And as you make plans to hit the road to go to Grandma’s house for the holidays, it’s a good idea to make sure you’re up on your vehicle maintenance, especially if your trip will require driving through parts of the country that are more prone to harsh winter weather than you might be used to.
Our top recommendation, of course, is looking over your windshield, mirrors and other pieces of glass for damage. If you find a problem spot, call us at 1-877-770-0727 and we’ll help you set up an appointment.
Beyond your windshield, look for items on this checklist that might help you better brave the elements during your holiday travels.
Oil Quality. Cold weather tends to make certain oil types get thicker, so ensure you’re using a lower-viscosity oil to avoid that problem. If you’ve gone more than 3,000 miles without an oil change, make it a priority to switch out the oil.
Passenger Care Items. To protect you and your loved ones in the event you become stranded during cold weather, be sure to keep items in your vehicle including a spare tire with proper tire-changing gear, a shovel, jumper cables, cat litter (to improve traction on slippery roads), a flashlight with batteries and a First Aid kit.
Tires. Double-check tire pressure and pump extra air if needed for maximum traction. If you have four-wheel-drive, test it to verify everything is in working order.
Under-Hood Elements. Take inventory of your wiring, hoses, fan belts and battery, among other components under the hood of your vehicle.
Wipers. Don’t let your windshield cake up with ice because you failed to check the antifreeze! Add more as needed, and ensure your wiper blades don’t have cuts or nicks that might leave streaks.
Be proactive to stay safe during your holiday travels this year!
