Give your brain a holistic boost

18996499_MBrains are light, but they sure expend a lot of energy. Consider this: your brain makes up only two percent of your body weight, but uses more than 20 percent of its energy stores at any given time. That’s why it only makes sense to ensure your brain is functioning at optimum levels at all times.

Unfortunately, all the artificial chemicals, flavors, dyes, additives and other “junk” from the environment can clog it up fast. Here’s how to give your brain a boost – the holistic way.

Cut out chemicals

Avoid using chemical cleaners and solvents at home and work whenever possible. Primary offenders that negatively affect brain function include hairspray, paint, paint strippers, varnish and carpet fumes. The list goes on and on. Try using natural citrus spray cleaners instead when you can.

Go organic

Consuming organic foods is great way to get a healthy brain. If these aren’t available, then a natural fruit and vegetable wash is a must. It’s especially important to get organic versions of the following, which otherwise tend to have a high pesticide content: cherries, peaches, nectarines, strawberries, blueberries, apples, grapes, peppers, celery, kale, spinach and collard greens. And you don’t have to head to an expensive specialty grocer, either. Most supermarkets now feature robust organic sections in their produce aisles.

Get green

Green tea increases mental alertness, as well as decreases your risk of stroke and heart disease. If you don’t enjoy green tea, black tea offers these benefits to a lesser extent. Branch out with different flavors and try a fruity or jasmine-based green tea for some variety. Green tea can be enjoyed hot or cold, but it traditionally served warm in small cups.

If you’re new to the holistic approach, you don’t have to make big changes all at once. Try one or two new things a week, and before you know it you’ll see the brain benefits!
