Get movin’ to ward off varicose veins

A sedentary lifestyle, coupled with an overweight physique, can really put you at risk for varicose veins. The good news is that you don’t have to run a marathon to add a healthy dose of activity to your routine. Instead, incorporate small, impactful activities into your lifestyle.

Here are a few ideas to get you up and moving:

  • Choose a “B List” parking spot. Walking from the farthest corner of the parking lot every day really adds up. If it’s a parking garage, head for the roof and use the stairs.
  • Add additional movement to your current exercise routine. Swinging your arms when you walk will help you reach a brisk pace of three to four miles per hour — a healthy level of activity.
  • Rediscover your inner child.  Adults shouldn’t miss a chance to get in on the fun of a playground or pool.  Playing alongside children encourages physical fitness and sets a good example.
  • Tackle that housework. Fifteen minutes of cleaning burns approximately 80 calories. That’s another reason to tackle that sticky kitchen floor.
  • Get a buddy. Whether it’s walking, jogging swimming or another activity, adding a social element is a proven strategy to help you stick with your commitment to daily exercise.
  • Walk the dog. Both Fido and your heart will thank you.
  • Be a stair master. Taking the stairs is good for your legs, knees and cardiovascular system. Don’t overdo it. Take one flight at a time and work up to it gradually.

These easy and accessible ways to exercise don’t require anything but your own two feet. Get that body in motion!
