With so many temptations lurking, keeping up your healthy eating habits during the holidays can be hard. But, you don’t have to wait until your New Year’s resolution to get healthy. You can start now with these easy tips – and it really won’t be as difficult as you think to eat well through the holidays.
Tip #1: Make and share your own healthy treats. You can offer to bring the vegetable tray, fruit salad, or other healthy dishes. That way, you know you’ll have something nutritious to eat regardless of what’s on the menu.
Tip #2: Don’t let yourself get too hungry, or dehydrated. You know that old rule that you shouldn’t go grocery shopping on an empty stomach? Well, this wisdom is even more useful during the holidays. Be sure you’re eating small, healthful meals and snacks throughout the day. You’ll be less likely to binge eat, and treats won’t seem as tempting.
Tip #3: Portion control is the key! When you do decide to indulge yourself, be smart about it. Take smaller portions, and smaller bites, of your favorites. Smaller meal portions will allow you to have more self-control on the amount of food you eat, because you’ll be more satisfied by eating slowly. Savor each bite, and stop when you’re not hungry anymore.
Tip #4: Pass on the treats you don’t really love. If you love mash potatoes with gravy but are just *meh* about the stuffing, then skip the stuffing. Save yourself for your favorite foods, and don’t feel bad about passing on the rest. You’ll save on calories, and still feel satisfied.
