You need to think big picture and long term here, especially if you plan to sell your home some day. So how do you ensure you’re making the right color choice? Here are a few tips:

  • Take the color samples home and place beside your furniture, cabinetry and walls. You want a nice contrast, not a clash. You should be able to tell right away if the color works. (And, conversely, if it’s wrong.) For tile flooring, you’ll want to make sure the flooring doesn’t clash with countertops or backsplashes.
  • Don’t necessarily pick whatever’s trendy. What’s hot now may not be appealing 10 years down the road. Think classic.
  • Consider your lifestyle. Will a single speck of dust show up? Do you have the time to commit to cleaning your floors regularly, or will you need a color that’s more forgiving? If you have children and pets, patterned carpet may be your best choice because the pattern helps hide spills and stains.

For example, you might opt for a darker color in your living room to make the space feel cooler. For sunny rooms and warmer climates, a cooler tone may be a better choice. If you’re indifferent, you can’t go wrong with a neutral color, which can make a room feel more spacious. Neutral tones are also your best bet for high traffic areas.

Of course, floor color is a matter of taste. Ultimately, you’re the one who will be enjoying it, so choose wisely. Happy travels as you explore the wide world of flooring!
