Homeowners have always used floor plants to decorate their kitchens, porches and other areas of the house. The larger size and beauty of these plants allows them to fill in some space in a natural, beautiful way. But what about taking the whole “bringing the outdoors in” theme to the next level? As in an entire floor full of plants … with walking space, of course.
While this may sound a little adventurous for the average homeowner, it’s actually more
realistic than you may think. Let’s say you have a back porch, sunroom or even a large kitchen. Simply mark off an area and start picking out plants to fill the floor space.
Be sure there is a waterproof liner underneath the plants to prevent any damage to the floors. Next, planters or troughs can be placed around the room. Pots can be placed close together or far apart — it’s up to you. Now it’s time to place your flowers or plants in the planters or troughs. Succulents are a great fit, as they don’t require much water. You can also use more traditional plants or flowers. Just be sure to avoid any leakage, which could leave permanent damage on the flooring.
Considering a plant floor? Talk to your florist and your flooring supplier. Both can offer decorative and practical advice. It’s a unique idea that will allow you to enjoy a touch of outdoors in your home.
