Five proven networking strategies for IT professionals

Man with smart phone on handWhen is the very best time to build your professional network? Before you need to use it to find a job, advance your career, or just connect with people to find new opportunities. This wisdom holds true for technology professionals, as well. Even in our hot job market, having the right set of hard skills isn’t always enough to open the right doors.

That’s why it’s so important to stay connected in our industry. Whether or not you’re currently searching for a job, you’ll want to consider taking advantage of all opportunities to build your professional connections. Try incorporating the following five proven strategies for networking in IT.

Strategy #1: Join a professional group for IT folks. This is one of the easiest ways to build a network, if you don’t know how (or where) to begin. These groups often host  networking events, and some of them also maintain online job boards. You might start by checking out the website of the Association of Information Technology Professionals. You can also connect with mentors in groups such as Women in Technology, and the National BDPA.

Strategy #2: Seek out professional development opportunities. Any time you stretch your skill set, you’ve put yourself in a great position to meet new people and build your network. Take a class, volunteer your tech skills, take on a personal project, or volunteer for a challenging assignment at work. Each of these situations will put you in a great position to connect with others.

Strategy #3: Increase the likelihood of finding new opportunities by casting a wide net. Don’t be afraid to get involved in professional networking events in another industry. The healthcare, nonprofit, banking, and retail industries, for example, all need talented tech staff.

Strategy #4: Always offer your help first. Professional networking should be about building mutually beneficial relationships. You’ll get far better results from your attempts to build those relationships if you keep it personable. Start by listening. Try to understand the other person’s needs, then provide them with something useful. They’ll remember your generosity, and tell others about you.

Strategy #5: Don’t neglect your existing network. These people are your current and former co-workers, friends, and family.  Be sure to maintain these essential relationships. You never know when a-friend-of-a-friend will know someone that turns out to offer you the next great opportunity. All of your social engagements shouldn’t be about networking, but it doesn’t hurt to chat up the people you meet outside of official networking events. Show interest in other people, and you might find an unexpected opportunity to share your skills.
