When searching for the right person to handle network maintenance, product software development or supply chain management, do you hire talented people to work in house or do you choose to outsource?
In recent years, companies have been choosing to outsource for talent in order to cut costs and allow their managers to focus on their core businesses. But that model of management and IT services can change, based on the needs of the company.
General Motors Co., for example, was a pioneer of the trend toward outsourcing information technology work. But last year, Reuters reported that the company had announced it would reverse that policy with plans to hire new in-house software developers, database experts and other professionals in the IT industry over the next three to five years.
“If you’re more efficient and you can go through the process more quickly, you have more time and more resources to be looking at innovations that provide a competitive advantage for the company,” GM spokesperson Juli Huston-Rough said.

What’s the take away lesson learned from GM’s experience? Companies that are able to streamline their IT applications and simplify how they store and transmit data may be better served by hiring full time company employees with the specialized technical skills they need.
On the other hand, if you have a short-term project to accomplish or systems upgrade to implement, you may still be better served to find resources from an outsourced group.
