During the real estate boom, banks often would order ‘drive-by’ appraisals of properties that required only a passing glance at a home’s exterior. These days, though, lenders are requiring more thorough appraisals. Proposed federal rules would make sure that drive-by appraisals remain a thing of the past, at least for the riskiest types of loans.
